Optical Design Final Project

In Optical Design, we modeled a variety of lamp and luminaire elements, ranging from a roadway lens, wide beam lens, wall grazer, and a tubular skylight. For this project, I created a wall grazer that can hold its own in a competitive market. I used AGi32 to compare commercially available wall grazers with my own and Photopia to design and model my wall grazer.

The final design of the wall grazer has a maximum illuminance of 87 fc, a minimum illuminance of 3.4 fc, and a max:min ratio of 25.6. Its candela distribution and illuminance on the wall can be seen to the right.

I compared luminaires currently on the market to come up with the following goals:

  • Smooth, uniform illuminance distribution on wall

  • Max:min ratio below 40

  • Smooth candela distribution

I then used Photopia to create a wall grazer that achieves these goals and is comparable to what is available commercially. The results are below.
