Lighting Controls Final Project
In this project, I used information from code, occupant needs, and current topics in lighting to choose the lighting controls for a small scale medical building. I consulted ASHRAE 90.1 and read articles about UV-C disinfection and circadian lighting to come up with a plan to comprehensively address the needs of all occupants in the space.
Process
First, I came up with a simple lighting plan for the building. To prioritize occupant health and easy cleaning, I included UV-C lamps for disinfection. The design also addresses occupants’ general well-being, by including circadian responsive lighting that has different scenes to create distinct times of day indoors.
Code Requirements were taken from ASHRAE 90.1 (2019) Table 9.6.1
Sequence of Operations
Daytime Occupancy
The lobby, hallways, and exterior are all turned on to 50% in the mornings.
When people enter the lobby or hallways, the lights turn on to full (determined by photocell), and turn back down to 50% of that value after 15 minutes of non-occupancy.
The occupant has the ability to locally adjust the lighting to the level they desire.
After-Hours Occupancy
After business hours, interior lights turn off as per a timeclock.
Lights in the lobby and in hallways will turn on to 50% when occupancy is detected and exam rooms must be turned on manually after hours.
