Illumination II Final Project

In this project, we delved into the design process. I used Visual Lighting to do a case study of accent lighting on display cases, AGi32 to check the compliance of the design, and ASHRAE Standard 90.1 to find illuminance, lighting power density, and controls requirements.

Accent Ratios

I used Visual Lighting to do a study of accent ratios for display stands illuminated with three-point lighting.

 Psychological Effects of Light

There are two ways the psychology of light came into play in this project. I determined the visual hierarchies of different spaces, meaning which areas should have more light and which should have less light in order to draw the eye to what is important. I also determined where each space type belongs on Dr. David Olson’s Circumplex Model of emotions. This allowed me to determine what type of lighting was appropriate for each space type.

 Light Maps

These light maps bring together information from both the building itself and the previous research to determine where daylight will be usable and where electric lighting should be focused.

 Lighting Plan

The lighting plan focuses on the lobby, cubicles, and lounge area. I chose luminaires from a variety of sources and read their cut sheets to ensure they were the correct luminaires for the job.

 Code Compliance and Controls Intent

To ensure code compliance I used AGi32 to check the illuminance values in the lobby and lounge. I also checked the power budget compliance by comparing allowed lighting power density (LPD) from ASHRAE 90.1 with the actual LPD in my building using both the space-by-space method and the total building method. I then used the ASHRAE control requirements to determine which controls I would implement in the various spaces.
